Bocheletsane Primary School

Area 1590 SqMt.

Status: Completed 2017

Situated in Mantsonyane in the Maluti mountains of Lesotho, the Primary School accomodates 600 children aged from five to ten years. Rather than a single imposing structure, the school comprises five clusters, each housing classrooms, with an enclosed play area. These are strung along a wide central stairway descending along the inclined terrain. The staircase serves as a gathering space and an open-air amphitheater. This configuration ensures that the scale of the school is similar to that of a domestic building, and children can relate to it. For children venturing out of home for the first time it is important that the environment is not intimidating. The clusters are embedded in the landscape and follow the contours of the site.

The classrooms boast abundant natural light and sunshine with North facing skylights. Additionally, small eye-level windows offer engaging external views. As the clusters follow the levels of the hillside, the interplay of varied elevations conjures up enchanting vistas that spark the young imagination. With a mere glance out the window, a child might envision a figure strolling through the sky, enhancing the school's magical allure.
